Hello all,

I am so proud of my homeroom! They did such a good job on our Character Trait play last week.  Thank You to all the parents that were able to come out and show your support. This week we are continuing to read Island Of the Blue Dolphins.  Karana is a great role model on how to be resourceful.  We are moving forward with Verbs and Direct Objects in Grammar.   Both classes have done a really good job on our first type of summary writing and this week students have all week to complete the last one.  Students should be bringing in what they are working on if there is time in class and if they would like any pointers before the final copy is due on Friday.

By Friday
Five Paragraphs a very short intro paragraph, a three paragraph body on each dinosaur and what they have in common and a very short closing paragraph.  DINOSAUR

Other than that I enjoyed all of your parent teacher conferences and appreciate all of support.  Their were several AR tests taken today.  I am so happy when we can all work together because these kiddos are very smart and when  they know that you and I are on the same page students work harder!

Hello Hello Hello,

I am so sorry but the usb stick that I have been using all week is no longer working and any of my new assignments are not able to be loaded.  I will work as quickly as possible to get the blog updated. Thank you for your patience.

I am so excited to see what the students Paper Bag Book Reports look like.  Students will be presenting the ten items that they felt represented ten significant events from The Great Gilly Hopkins in an oral presentation.

I am very pleased that most students did very well on their Preposition test this past week.  We have a couple of wrap up assignments with prepositions before we move on to Verbs.  Students will have another writing assignment this week and we will continue on in Spelling.

Last week students were made aware of any missing assignments that they had and I am happy that most students took this as an opportunity to turn those assignments in.  I will be sending reports home if students are still missing multiple assignments as a way to bring them up one more time before the next progress report.

Please be aware that November 1st and 2nd there will be no school for students.  However they should still attend the Parent Teacher Conferences.  Times will be sent home this week.

Welcome Back!

I am so excited that we are back and ready to go.  Please be aware that this week is Spirit Week.
Tuesday- Western Day
Wednesday- Pink Day
Thursday -Hero Day
Friday- Black and Gold Day

Student can have free dress if they are wearing the theme.

In Reading we are not starting a new novel we are wrapping up Gilly.  Students have been given class time to work on their Paper Bag Book Report.  I also provided a worksheet and we went over what Plot & Theme are.  We will continue to work in class however the majority of work will need to be done at home. In Grammar tomorrow we have a pre test and Thursday we will have a preposition test.  In writing students we will have a few activities that will help to make their next essay even more descriptive.

We have Parent- Teacher Conferences coming up on the first and second of November.  Remember there is no school for students however, they should still be at the conference.  If you would prefer a morning or evening please feel free to e-mail me with your preference.

** Students have been working very hard on their Paper Bag Book Reports and I am letting them turn them in on Monday.  Please be aware that this means that I hope to see well done projects especially with all of the in class time they have been given.  This also means that students have one more day to get help from me editing their plot and themes.  Tomorrow we will take class time to go over the rubrics that I am going to use.  It is important to note that this is the culminating event for this novel and it is worth a lot of points.

There are some similar themes and events that occurred in the movie Finding Nemo and the book The Great Gilly Hopkins.  Please watch and create a double bubble that compares the two.  Do not write things like they are fish but rather the emotions, events and behaviors of the characters.  This is due Monday no later.

Hello Everyone,

I am super excited that Parent- Teacher Conferences went so well.  I tried to make sure that any missing assignments were stapled to your conference sheet.  If I missed something I am so sorry I will try and make sure that any old assignments are all somewhere on the blog to help students catch up.  This week students need to be at 75% of their AR goal.  Most students are on track which is super exciting.  Please help me encourage your child to continue reading books appropriate for them.    Otherwise we are completing our first essay this week.  We are so very close to finishing our first novel I am sure that by next week it will be finished.  Students were so excited last week when our main character was actually starting to develop as a person!  We are plugging away at our Prepositions and I am so happy about how well Spelling is going.

Hello all,

It is Parent -Teacher conference week!  I know the whole intermediate team is anxious to share all of the progress that students are making.  Because of the issues with the grade book I have attached any missing work to students progress reports and no late points will be taken off.  Please remember that students need to be at 50% of their AR goal this week.   Also several assignments were passed back today/  If students want to raise their grade they can make corrections and earn more points.

Hello All,

I am so excited to say that this week was our first NOVA presentation.  Please ask your child to tell you what they learned every Monday!  Last week a lot of time was spent in the computer lab getting the A+ testing done.  As a result we did not have a Grammar test and we were not able to read any chapters in Gilly.  This week we will continue to to read, I am hoping to get our first essay underway as well as continuing in our preposition test.  This week we are testing on letters s-n.  I am also excited to say that AR goals have been made and students have already started taking tests and by this week students need to be at 25 % of their goal.

Also this week parent teacher conference slips are going to be sent home.  Please return them as soon as possible to help ensure the most convenient time for your schedule.

9/4/12

Hello All,

I would like to start off by saying thank you for all of your patience. I have had some technical issues with my computer in class and because I have been at school so late the past week by the time I get home it is way past the time when homework is being done. Therefore, I did not update my blog like I would normally. I know that the issues are being worked on and I hope that this will not be a difficulty this week.
I would also like to thank you for your understanding during our transition time this week. Mrs. Apalategui is very excited about joining our Intermediate Team. Some of you may already be familiar with her as she was previously on the Elementary Team. I appreciate her willingness to help us out in our time of need. Having said that we will miss Mr. Potteiger!
On a different note I am almost finished installing our new Mimio technology throughout the school.  Students in my class as well as during my enrichment time have already been able to use and play with our new toy as it is referred to in my room.
This week we are continuing to read The Great Gilly Hopkins.  We are starting to figure out why she acts the way that she does and see her develop as a person.  Grammar will be added in more frequently and we will have our first writing assignment at some point this week.

8/20/12

Hello Everyone,

I am so happy with how well our first week of school went.  The students are starting to get back into the hang of what is expected and classroom routines.  Unfortunately, we have had to rearrange our schedules slightly to accommodate new p.e. times. However, I think that it will work out just fine.  In my class this week we will begin reading our first novel The Great Gilly Hopkins!  We will continue with our Word of the Day and Daily Oral Language activities.  We will be adding more Grammar work to our routine.  Students received a list of prepositions last week they will need to memorize this list and on Friday we will take a test where they will need to know the words listed under A & B.  We have two more Thinking Maps that we need to complete as well this week to finish off our introduction.  I look forward to seeing parents from last year and meeting our new Telesis parents at the Back to School Night on Tuesday!

New School Year

Hello All,

I am so excited to welcome everyone to a new school year.  We are offering new programs, more specific help for students and a very well rounded curriculum.  Also changing this year is what I am teaching!  I am the traditional fifth grade Language Arts teacher.  And I have to share that a former student that is used to me being the Math, Science, and Social Studies teacher asked on the first day if I knew how to teach Language Arts.  I assure you that I do have several years of experience teaching reading, writing and grammar and any of the other skills associated with the Language Arts.  As we approach the first full week of school I look forward to some new activities, learning more about our new class members and helping both students and parents in any way that I can.

On the Blog-  Along the sides please click on links that will give you note pages, scoring guides and keep you up to date on school events.

This week we will begin implementing elements of our normal routine.  We will also continue to do some of the background activities that will be used when we fully get into our normal schedule.

I promise to stay as on top of the links and homework as much as possible.  This week everything except for the reading homework has been done in class and students have been doing wonderfully.  I therefore did not put the links on if anyone still wants to see it please add a comment and I will put them on!
